|H I Gas in the Environment of the Seyfert Galaxies NGC 6764 and Markarian 1126|
We present the results of a 21 cm line study of the environment of twoSeyfert galaxies: NGC 6764 and Mrk 1126. Both galaxies are embedded inlarge and slightly distorted gaseous disks that extend 2-4 times fartherthan their optical diameters. The asymmetry of the H I distribution andprofile is indicative of a weak perturbation, although one that is notstrong enough to disturb either the gas or the stars in the inner partsof the galaxies. Whereas Mrk 1126 does have a nearby companion, MCG-02-58-017, the gravitational interaction between the two galaxies isquite weak, and it is unlikely that MCG -02-58-017 is responsible fordriving the nuclear activity in Mrk 1126. NGC 6764 has no companionswithin a radius of 160 kpc. We conclude that the nuclear activity in NGC6764 and Mrk 1126 is unrelated to the galaxies' immediate environment.
|Nearby Optical Galaxies: Selection of the Sample and Identification of Groups|
In this paper we describe the Nearby Optical Galaxy (NOG) sample, whichis a complete, distance-limited (cz<=6000 km s-1) andmagnitude-limited (B<=14) sample of ~7000 optical galaxies. Thesample covers 2/3 (8.27 sr) of the sky (|b|>20deg) andappears to have a good completeness in redshift (97%). We select thesample on the basis of homogenized corrected total blue magnitudes inorder to minimize systematic effects in galaxy sampling. We identify thegroups in this sample by means of both the hierarchical and thepercolation ``friends-of-friends'' methods. The resulting catalogs ofloose groups appear to be similar and are among the largest catalogs ofgroups currently available. Most of the NOG galaxies (~60%) are found tobe members of galaxy pairs (~580 pairs for a total of ~15% of objects)or groups with at least three members (~500 groups for a total of ~45%of objects). About 40% of galaxies are left ungrouped (field galaxies).We illustrate the main features of the NOG galaxy distribution. Comparedto previous optical and IRAS galaxy samples, the NOG provides a densersampling of the galaxy distribution in the nearby universe. Given itslarge sky coverage, the identification of groups, and its high-densitysampling, the NOG is suited to the analysis of the galaxy density fieldof the nearby universe, especially on small scales.
|The Mass-to-Light Ratio of Binary Galaxies|
We report on the mass-to-light ratio determination based on a newlyselected binary galaxy sample, which includes a large number of pairswhose separations exceed a few hundred kpc. The probabilitydistributions of the projected separation and the velocity differencehave been calculated considering the contamination of optical pairs, andthe mass-to-light (M/L) ratio has been determined based on the maximumlikelihood method. The best estimate of the M/L in the B band for 57pairs is found to be 28-36 depending on the orbital parameters and thedistribution of optical pairs (solar unit: H_0=50 km s^-1 Mpc^-1). Thebest estimate of the M/L for 30 pure spiral pairs is found to be 12-16.These results are relatively smaller than those obtained in previousstudies but are consistent with each other within the errors. Althoughthe number of pairs with large separation is significantly increasedcompared with previous samples, the M/L does not show any tendency ofincrease but is found to be almost independent of the separation ofpairs beyond 100 kpc. The constancy of the M/L beyond 100 kpc mayindicate that the typical halo size of spiral galaxies is less than ~100kpc.
|The Southern Sky Redshift Survey|
We report redshifts, magnitudes, and morphological classifications for5369 galaxies with m_B <= 15.5 and for 57 galaxies fainter than thislimit, in two regions covering a total of 1.70 sr in the southerncelestial hemisphere. The galaxy catalog is drawn primarily from thelist of nonstellar objects identified in the Hubble Space TelescopeGuide Star Catalog (GSC). The galaxies have positions accurate to ~1"and magnitudes with an rms scatter of ~0.3 mag. We compute magnitudes(m_SSRS2) from the relation between instrumental GSC magnitudes and thephotometry by Lauberts & Valentijn. From a comparison with CCDphotometry, we find that our system is homogeneous across the sky andcorresponds to magnitudes measured at the isophotal level ~26 magarcsec^-2. The precision of the radial velocities is ~40 km s^-1, andthe redshift survey is more than 99% complete to the m_SSRS2 = 15.5 maglimit. This sample is in the direction opposite that of the CfA2; incombination the two surveys provide an important database for studies ofthe properties of galaxies and their large-scale distribution in thenearby universe. |Total magnitude, radius, colour indices, colour gradients and photometric type of galaxies|
We present a catalogue of aperture photometry of galaxies, in UBVRI,assembled from three different origins: (i) an update of the catalogueof Buta et al. (1995) (ii) published photometric profiles and (iii)aperture photometry performed on CCD images. We explored different setsof growth curves to fit these data: (i) The Sersic law, (ii) The net ofgrowth curves used for the preparation of the RC3 and (iii) A linearinterpolation between the de Vaucouleurs (r(1/4) ) and exponential laws.Finally we adopted the latter solution. Fitting these growth curves, wederive (1) the total magnitude, (2) the effective radius, (3) the colourindices and (4) gradients and (5) the photometric type of 5169 galaxies.The photometric type is defined to statistically match the revisedmorphologic type and parametrizes the shape of the growth curve. It iscoded from -9, for very concentrated galaxies, to +10, for diffusegalaxies. Based in part on observations collected at the Haute-ProvenceObservatory.
|Compact groups of galaxies in the nearby universe|
We have searched for compact groups of galaxies among the largestcatalog of nearby groups (LGG catalog). 21 new compact groups of atleast 3 members were found. Their surface brightnesses are generallylower than those of Hickson compact groups (HCGs), and theircharacteristics are close to those of loose groups. We have alsoretrieved all HCGs of the nearby universe. These are all embedded ingroups, forming the cores or substructures of loose groups. Theseresults suggest that compact groups may form as core or substructureswithin loose groups (like the HCGs), or form from loose groups when theystart collapsing (like those of the LGG).
|The morphological catalogue of galaxies equatorial survey|
We present 865 redshifts of galaxies located in the equatorial stripdelta between -17.5 deg and -2.5 deg in the right ascension rangebetween 20 h and 5 h. Redshifts have been obtained for the completesample of all 833 galaxies in the Morphological Catalog of Galaxies withmagnitudes brighter than m = 14.5 (corresponding approximately tom(Zwicky) = 15.0). This sample also includes three galaxies from othersources with more reliable magnitudes, satisfying this limit, and 29fainter galaxies, usually companions of the galaxies in the magnitudelimited sample. Our maps of a very large volume of nearby spacedemonstrate a variety of coherent large scale structures which includelarge voids, 20-50/h Mpc in diameter and large walls at least 70/h Mpcacross.
|General study of group membership. II - Determination of nearby groups|
We present a whole sky catalog of nearby groups of galaxies taken fromthe Lyon-Meudon Extragalactic Database. From the 78,000 objects in thedatabase, we extracted a sample of 6392 galaxies, complete up to thelimiting apparent magnitude B0 = 14.0. Moreover, in order to considersolely the galaxies of the local universe, all the selected galaxieshave a known recession velocity smaller than 5500 km/s. Two methods wereused in group construction: a Huchra-Geller (1982) derived percolationmethod and a Tully (1980) derived hierarchical method. Each method gaveus one catalog. These were then compared and synthesized to obtain asingle catalog containing the most reliable groups. There are 485 groupsof a least three members in the final catalog.
|Southern extension of the Perseus Supercluster?|
In order to investigate in 3D the galaxian density enhancement locatedin the south of the Pisces Perseus Supercluster, a redshift survey isconducted of early-type galaxies with a diameter greater than 1 arcminin a region bounded by 20 h and 6 h, and -20 and 0 deg. Data presentedinclude those for 157 radial velocities which, added to all thepreviously known redshifts in this region, show a galaxy distributionconcentrated around 5000 km/s and the presence of a void of about 25/hMpc. These two characteristics are the same as the ones found by Haynesand Giovanelli (1989), in the northern part of the Pisces PerseusSupercluster, suggesting that it could extend toward the south. Acomparison with the recent data obtained in the same region byPellegrini et al. (1990) is presented.

|Tidal triggering of Seyfert galaxies and quasars - Occurrence in multiple systems|
An extension of earlier work which showed with computer models thatobserved companions for Seyferts are sufficient to induce gravitationalinstability in a disk galaxy is discussed. The instability leads to aninflow of matter into the nuclear region and possibly to Seyfertactivity. If selection effects have been properly taken into account,the fraction of Seyfert galaxies found in multiple systems is at leastthree quarters and possibly higher. Furthermore, the Hubble types of thefew isolated Seyferts are consistent with their being results of recentgalaxy mergers.
